 It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances

The main celebrations take place in the largest city, Colombo, where the President hoists the national flag and delivers a speech which is nationally televised.

Many national struggles were made in the history of Sri Lanka. And on the independence day all of these are remembered and celebrated. But the independence movement against the British is especially recalled.

Under European control for some 450 years, Ceylon won independence from the United Kingdom in 1948 and changed its name in 1972.

Prior to the year 1972, Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon.

Don Stephen Senanayake became Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister.

This national day holds much significance for the people of Sri Lanka as it reflects the history of great sacrifices made by many Sri Lankans in the Attainment of its freedom.

 It is considered as a major national holiday in the country.

It is the day to pay tribute to the armed forces that played a major role in the country's freedom struggle.

The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka or popularly known as Sri Lanka which is located in the Indian Ocean and is a part of South East Asia.

By a process of peaceful, constitutional evolution, Sri Lanka won back her independence in 1948 and is now a sovereign republic, with membership in the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations Organization.

It is celebrated with splendor by Sri Lankans from all corners of the island.

The President will also ceremonially hoist the National Flag, which will be followed by the National Anthem and auspicious chanting of Jayamangala Gatha.

 For the first time, this year 2016, the parade will be held in the afternoon.

The National Flag will be hoisted in homes, offices and state buildings across the island

The celebrations will begin at 8.30am followed by cultural events.

  1. Wish you a very 26 January Happy Republic Day 2019 to all of you. January 26 is our Republic Day. We celebrate this day every year. In 1950, our India became a sovereign democratic republic and it had its own constitution.
